Amber Johnston is an emerging artist living and working on Wangal Land, Sydney. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art in 2023 from the National Art School and her work spans a variety of media including sculpture, fibre-art, print-making and painting.
Her work is process-based and addresses the concepts of materiality, spirituality and the environment. She views the physical act of making work as of equal importance to the final product, and is completely absorbed in the process and chance evolution of each piece. Created through repetitious actions Amber’s work provides a calm counterbalance to the superficiality and detachment of this frenetic modern world. Her abstract sculptures, constructed primarily from leftover paper shopping bags, encourage viewers to look beyond the material world to a place of contemplation, an awareness of our planet and our place in the bigger picture of life.
